Context:
Towers
is a well-known language institution that is located in the city of
Cúcuta-Norte de Santander. Apart from teaching English, you can also learn
German, Portuguese, and French with native teachers of the language in the case
of Portuguese. Classes are taught based on an autonomous and cooperative
learning model where the teacher is in charge of teaching classes both
face-to-face and virtually. Specifically, I am going to give some details about
the classes given in the virtual environment, since it has been the methodology
that I have been working on since I joined the institution thanks to my
pedagogical internship process at the university.
Problem /
Issue:
I
have been given the task of teaching English at basic levels of learning
(A1-A2) and I have been able to identify a problem in reading skills in
students, it is very surprising that an A1 level student has a better level in
that reading skill than an A2. The classes are in a virtual learning
environment and the bibliographic material is divided into
(speaking-listening-reading-writing) for the reading stage the idea is that
they listen to a brief audio before reading the text and with this they can have
a structured base in relation to the pronunciation of diphthongs, vowels and
consonants, however, The
mispronunciation of some words often delays the learning process and progress
of students. For this reason, I have decided to work with them on the phonetic
alphabet.
Solution / Response:
Basically,
my solution is based on the previous teaching of phonetic approach (IPA) and
its alphabet, I also want to emphasize diphthongs which is usually a very struggling
topic in foreign language learners. It has been shown that thanks to the
correct teaching of phonics sounds at the learning level and development in the
reading part tends to improve notoriously, I want to propose reading exercises
based on phonetic transcription so that they become familiar with the different
blends of vowels and others. Finally, to know whether phonics can adjust the
students’ reading pronunciation, we must conduct an observation from the different
meetings and the result will be compared.
